Nitrogen Purging Services in KSA, Measured to a Target

Before hydrocarbons go back into a system, or before it is opened for maintenance, the oxygen or the gas inside it has to be displaced. We purge with nitrogen to an agreed oxygen or hydrocarbon level, prove it with calibrated analysers, and record every reading.

Why purge with nitrogen

Removing the conditions for a fire or explosion

A fire needs fuel, oxygen and an ignition source. When a system is being commissioned, brought back after a shutdown, or opened for work, there is a moment when fuel and air can mix inside the pipework. Nitrogen purging removes that risk by replacing the air, or the process gas, with an inert atmosphere until the measured concentration is well below the flammable range.

Our nitrogen purging services in KSA start from a purge plan. We work out the system volume, choose the method, set the target oxygen or hydrocarbon level with your operations team, and decide where to inject and where to vent and sample. That plan turns purging from guesswork into a measured job with a clear finish point.

Nitrogen is also used to dry systems after hydrotesting, to leak test flanges that our bolting crews have just tightened, and to hold equipment under a slight positive pressure while it waits for start-up.

Methods

Purging methods we use, and when

The right method depends on the system layout, pressure rating and how many dead legs it has.

Pressure purging

The system is pressurised with nitrogen and vented down, repeatedly, until the target is reached. Effective for complex systems with branches and dead legs.

Flow-through displacement

Nitrogen is fed in at one end and vented at the other, pushing the old gas out ahead of it. Efficient for long, simple lines and pipelines.

Dilution purging

Continuous nitrogen flow mixes with and dilutes the contents of vessels and tanks until samples show the target concentration.

Drying

Dry nitrogen is passed through the system after water testing until the outlet dew point meets the specification.

Nitrogen leak testing

Systems are pressurised with nitrogen and flanged joints are checked for leaks before process fluids are introduced.

Nitrogen blanketing

A low positive nitrogen pressure keeps air and moisture out of equipment that is mothballed or waiting for start-up.

Choosing the purge method

System typeUsual methodWhy
Process piping with many branchesPressure purgingRepeated pressure cycles reach dead legs that a flow cannot sweep
Long pipelinesFlow-through displacementA single nitrogen front clears the line with the least gas
Vessels, drums and tanksDilution or pressure purgingLarge open volumes mix well and can be sampled at several points
Systems after hydrotestDrying with dry nitrogenRemoves residual moisture to a measured dew point
Low-pressure equipmentLow-flow dilutionKeeps pressure within what the equipment can take
How we work

A measured purge, step by step

Every nitrogen purging job is planned, monitored and recorded.

  1. Survey and plan

We review the P&IDs, isolation points and pressure ratings and agree the targets and the method with your operations team.

  2. Set up supply

Liquid nitrogen tankers with vaporisers, or cylinder packs for smaller jobs, are positioned with hoses, regulators and relief protection.

  3. Connect and isolate

Injection, vent and sample points are connected, and the system is checked for correct isolation before nitrogen is introduced.

  4. Purge and monitor

Nitrogen flow and pressure are controlled while oxygen, hydrocarbon or dew point readings are taken at the agreed points.

  5. Confirm the target

Purging continues until consecutive readings meet the target. The results are witnessed by your representative.

  6. Record and hand over

Readings, nitrogen used and final conditions are recorded and the system is handed over inerted or under positive pressure.

Where it is used

Where nitrogen purging is used

Commissioning, maintenance and decommissioning work in hydrocarbon and chemical plants.

Pre-commissioning

Removing air from new systems before process gas or liquids are introduced for the first time.

Shutdown and start-up

Gas freeing before units are opened, and inerting again before they come back online.

Pipelines

Displacing gas or product from line sections before cutting, tie-ins or valve replacement.

Tanks and vessels

Preparing for entry or for return to service, with measured oxygen and hydrocarbon levels.

Dryout after hydrotest

Removing moisture from gas systems where water would cause corrosion or hydrate problems.

Catalyst and reactor work

Keeping reactors inert during catalyst changes and protecting pyrophoric material from air.

FAQ

Nitrogen purging services in KSA: common questions

What oxygen level do you purge to?

The target is set by your site procedures and the next activity. Inerting before hydrocarbons are introduced commonly aims for a low single-digit oxygen percentage or less. We agree the figure with your operations team before starting.

How do you know when purging is complete?

We take readings at the agreed sample points with calibrated analysers. The purge is complete when consecutive readings meet the target, and the results are witnessed and recorded.

Do you supply the nitrogen?

We can arrange liquid nitrogen with vaporisers for large volumes or cylinder packs for smaller systems, or work with the nitrogen supply you already have on site.

Can nitrogen be used for leak testing?

Yes. Nitrogen leak testing is common before process gas is introduced. The system is pressurised to the agreed test pressure and each flanged joint is checked.

Is nitrogen purging dangerous?

Nitrogen does not burn, but it displaces oxygen and can cause asphyxiation. We control venting, monitor the work area and keep people out of vent zones and confined spaces.
